I do not, in any way consider myself a psychic, nor a psychic medium, but I do in fact consider myself a paranormal sensitive. After much research into this strange ability all I have come across with is – "If you are a sensitive, you'll know. There are no tests to prove it."
So in this article, I will offer some personal tips that might help guide a sensitive on an investigation, and also in life in general. But please note, all of these tips are my own personal opinions that help me, however, it is my hope that these tips can help others as well.
Ever since I was a small child (about 6 or 7) I have had some strange experiences, such as seeing a white misty figure in my bedroom doorway (even though my house is definitely not haunted) to tons of dreams about passed on loved ones (family and even pets).
In my life now, I can pick up on the energy of a space and almost always witness a strange sight that could accompany it.
Sometimes I can hear voices in real time or the sensation of being touched by something that is psychically not there. I even have precognitive dreams about random things that end up coming true. It's as if the ability has escalated with age – maybe because I am older now and can handle that level of intensity perhaps?
There are no real answers as to why someone is sensitive, but through research I have learned that it can be hereditary. So, with all that being said...
1) Go with your gut instinct.
This remains true for all paranormal investigators as well. If you feel as if you shouldn't do something, then don't. If you feel that an area should be checked out more, then do it. Your gut instinct is almost always right.
2) Take it as a compliment that someone has chosen YOU to communicate with.
There has to be a reason they chose you, just like a PERSON. Maybe they are drawn to your great personality or positive energy. If you walked into a room would you be attracted to the idiot who is drunk or starting a fight? Would you want to be in a room with a person who was mocking you or trying to provoke a reaction? NO! You would be drawn to someone who gives off a good positive energy and a great personality. Guess what? The same applies to spirits!
3) Have faith.
Not necessarily go to church, but have faith in a higher being or belief system to help protect yourself from negative entities.
People who are more sensitive to these things are also more vulnerable to psychic attacks or entities that can latch themselves on.
Use meditation or connect with spirit guides to help calm or relax yourself before, during and after an investigation. Say a prayer (to God or Saint Michael for instance) to help to keep your mind calm and feel safe.
Envision a white light bubble protecting you at all times while on an investigation.
4) Keep an open mind, but never go into a case with high expectations.
Try not to work yourself up over something because of the previous claims or reports you've heard in the past.
If you believe you're going to experience the same thing just because you're sensitive, and then nothing happens, you will end up extremely disappointed and feel pointless. When in reality, the point of an investigation is not to "hunt ghosts" but rather INVESTIGATE claims, history, etc.
You're helping someone in distress (and yourself too) whether you find evidence or not. This mentality should also apply to anyone, sensitive or not.
5) Absorb the environment of the location.
Take a short walk alone through the location to try and pick up on the energy and feelings before the investigation starts...and even during.
Sit in a room or space by yourself. Take a notebook to write down initial feelings or anything that comes to mind upon first entering.
As you spend more time in the space, expand upon those feelings.
6) Acknowledge your fears, but empower yourself to not be frightened.
The entities you are dealing with were once living, breathing people too, just like you and I. There is no need to fear them. Even though, on occasion, they may choose to show themselves to you in the most frightening of ways, understand that this may not be their intention, but rather the only way they know how to communicate.
It could be trickier for them to communicate with you than it appears, so consider setting ground rules first. Let these spirits know what you believe is an acceptable form of communication and direct them in the best way for them to achieve that. But don't open yourself up too much.
Protect yourself first and foremost. If something feels out of place or your fear becomes quite intense, close off the session and leave immediately. Trust your gut.
7) Be cautious when dealing with negative energies or anything demonic.
Like it was mentioned before, because you are so open, the other side is aware of this and will target you.
Not like you'll get possessed, but they will drain your energy and try to make you uncomfortable and scared.
You have to come prepared and literally form an invisible "shield" with your mind and believe that you are better than them and cannot be taken advantage of. Believe that you're stronger. This goes back to having a faith system in place as well.
